HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) — Runny noses and coughs can turn dangerous during flu season.

The season is set to pick up around Oct. 1, so Sentara Healthcare is urging the Hampton Roads community to get their flu shots sooner rather than later.

Sentara officials say it can take up to two weeks for the vaccine to produce the antibodies needed to protect against the flu. Although there are other options to stay safe — such as washing your hands frequently and avoiding touching your face — officials say the single best way to protect against the flu is through a flu shot.

Sentara will be hosting 10 free drive-through flu shot clinics across Hampton Roads on Oct. 6 for those 18 and older.

All you need to do is drive to one of their participating locations, roll down their window, and roll up your sleeve, in order to protect yourself this flu season.
