NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Crews suspended their search Sunday afternoon for a 12-year-old boy that went missing near the Ocean View Fishing Pier on Saturday.
The emergency call came in around 7 p.m. Saturday evening. Norfolk fire officials say the boy’s family believe he went missing around 6:45 p.m.
There were three children in the water that reportedly were in distress. Officials say family members were able to rescue two of the children.
It all happened approximately 100 yards away from the pier. 10 On Your Side’s Aesia Toliver went to the scene and reports a dive team started searching the water around 10 p.m.
Norfolk police, Norfolk Fire and Rescue, the Virginia Department of Inland Fisheries and the U.S. Coast Guard assisted in the search.
According to a tweet from Norfolk Police, all agencies concluded their search above and below the surface of the water just before 4 p.m. on Sunday.
A woman named Terika Askew, tells 10 On Your Side she is the aunt of the missing boy. His name is Davieon Craig Askew.
Askew says Davieon is a 7th grader from North Carolina. He was taken to the beach as a late birthday present. Askew says the family is in complete disbelief and is praying for the best.
