RICHMOND, Va. (WAVY) — The State Corporation Commission (SCC) Division of Utility and Railroad Safety is seeking federal help in the safety issue of blocked railroad crossings.

Virginia is one of 35 states with laws or regulations limiting the amount of time trains may block crossings by five to 20 minutes.

As of now, there are no federal regulations limiting the duration of blocked crossings.

“Blocked crossings can cause dangerous delays for police, fire, and other emergency responders, hinder basic mobility, and impede commerce. These scenarios pose a risk of serious injury, or worse,” said Steve Bradley, director of the Division of Utility and Railroad Safety.

If you are experiencing issues, you are encouraged to contact the SCC at varailsafety@scc.virginia.gov
