NEWSOMS, Va. (WAVY)  — Firefighters were dispatched to a brush fire in the area of General Thomas Highway and Cypress Bridge Road on Sunday.

The Newsoms Volunteer Fire Department and Boykins Fire-Rescue say they recieved the call at 1:05 p.m. When units arrived, they found mulitple areas of fire along a railroad track.

The largest fire was estimated to be 150 feet wide, officials say.

Hunterdale Volunteer Fire Department was also notified and responded to assist with a brush truck. Officials say all the fires were quickly extinguished.

The fires appear to have been caused by routine maintenance being performed by CSX that involved grinding the railroad rails, according to the Newsoms Volunteer Fire Department Facebook.

No injuries were reported.
