Rivals Virginia Wesleyan, CNU set for region title matchup

NEWPORT NEWS (WAVY) – In an ending befitting two of the top three teams in American, top-ranked and defending national champion Virginia Wesleyan out-lasted rival and third-ranked Christopher Newport University 7-6 in extra innings of Saturday’s NCAA region showdown.

Senior infielder Kiersten Richardson blasted a walk-off, solo home run to give the Marlins the win.

The Captains forced extra innings, thanks to Suffolk’s Calah Savage (Nansemond River High School), who belted a game-tying, two-run blast over the left field wall in the seventh and final inning. She was down to her last strike, and the team down to its last two outs, when she sent the game-tying shot over the wall.

Though it was CNU lost, they managed to rebound with a 7-6 win over Gettysburg in the elimination outing immediately after.

Wesleyan and CNU will now meet on championship Sunday to determine the region champion. Should Wesleyan win, the Marlins will claim the title. Should CNU win, the Captains would force a game two, which would be played immediately after.

First pitch for game one is set for 12:00 pm.
