Riders and runners hit pavement for annual “Tour de Cure”

SUFFOLK, Va. (WAVY) – Thousands of people took advantage of the beautiful weather today for a good cause.  The annual “Tour de Cure” took place at the Suffolk Executive Airport.

WAVY-TV 10 is a proud sponsor for this annual event.

Finding a cure for diabetes is the mission behind “Tour de Cure.”  The annual event is the largest fundraiser for the American Diabetes Association in Virginia.

Anthony Wilson, who organized 5k and 1 mile walk, said, “Everyday is diabetes awareness so whatever I can do to raise awareness and help find a cure and education, that’s what I do.”

For the first time, people could “Choose your Move:” cycle, walk, or run.  That new component was introduced by the Wilson family, who knows first-hand how challenging living with the disease can be.

“I was diagnosed in October 2012, and you know since that day, I’ve had my struggles, but I’ve been blessed,” said Anthony Wilson.

Anthony’s wife, Sheila, says it’s become their family’s mission to raise money and awareness to find a cure for diabetes.

“When Anthony was diagnosed in 2012, he almost died,” Sheila Wilson said.  “His blood sugar was over 1,000, which is unbelievable.  So after he got out of the hospital, we made it our mission as a family to get involved and build awareness.”

Some people, like “Team Brew” captain Mark Griffith, ride for a specific reason.  He said, “My niece, who is 13, she was diagnosed at 8 years old with type 1 diabetes so I wanted to do something to give back and help her, and help all my friends that have diabetes.”

“Team Brew” has been riding together in the event for four years.

They’re part of more than a thousand people working to raise $450,000 — using the power and determination they find on the pavement to find a cure for diabetes.
