Pregnant sailor’s beloved dog found, was at shelter in Chesapeake

UPDATE:  VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — A 10 On Your Side viewer helped a local family find its stolen French bulldog.

Denver is now back with his owners.

“We got our buddy back,” said Joseph Schuessel.

Someone kicked in Schuessel’s apartment door Tuesday.  The only thing taken was Denver.

There is once again a family sound inside this Virginia Beach apartment.  They found him at a shelter in Chesapeake.

”We know right off the bat it was Denver,”  Schuessel added.

10 On Your Side talked with Schuessel and Leah Bullock, a Navy couple, on Thursday.  Within an hour someone posted on the WAVY Facebook page

“A lot of people started commenting to check out this shelter in Chesapeake,” Schuessel added.

On the shelter’s webpage there was a French bulldog turned in Thursday evening.

The couple was there before the doors opened. They weren’t disappointed.

“When I saw him I just dropped to my knees and I started crying,” said Bullock said.

Denver’s owners still aren’t sure how he got to Chesapeake.   At this point they really don’t care.

“I hope they find them and they get in trouble for what they did, but at the end the day I got him back and that’s all that really matters,” Schuessel added.

“We are back to normal,” Bullock said.  “Our heart is healed.  For everybody to really care that much where we found him in three days, I’m just beyond grateful.”

Police are still looking for the person who broke into the couple’s apartment.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — A beloved family pet was stolen earlier this week in a Virginia Beach burglary, and the dog’s owners want him back.

“It’s just devastating,” said Leah Bullock. “It’s like my whole heart is gone.”

Bullock and her boyfriend Joseph Schuessel moved into a happy home.  It was just them with not one dog, but two.

“Even though we have a kid on the way, to us our dogs are basically our kids, too,” Schuessel added.

Bullock is eight months pregnant.  She has a tattoo of her French bulldog, Denver, on her arm.

“We got him in February of 2016 after our deployment,” Bullock said. “It didn’t take long for me to fall in love with him,” Bullock said.

But on Tuesday that love was ripped apart.  Someone kicked in the door of their Inspiration Arch apartment.  Amazingly, the only thing they took was one precious item.

“As soon as I walked in I could see directly that his crate was no longer there,” Schuessel said.

The thieves bypassed Jax the English bulldog, but took Denver.

“I know about cruel people, but I didn’t know they could be that cruel,” Bullock added.

“If you have the audacity to kick a door in and just steal a dog, you’re just a terrible person,” Schuessel said.

As the couple readies for their first human child, they are sick thinking about their furry one.

“We don’t know how he is, we don’t where he is, and it’s just completely torn us apart,” Schuessel said.

“We don’t have to go to the police,” Bullock added. “I don’t have to know your name.  I don’t even need to know what you look like. I don’t need to know anything about you.  I just need my dog back.”
