Police: Woman fatally shoots herself during traffic stop in Chesapeake


CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) — Police are investigating after a woman took her own life during a traffic stop Wednesday afternoon near a gas station in Chesapeake. 

According to police, the woman pulled out a gun and shot herself during the incident near the intersection of Berkley Ave. and Wilson Road. 

Officers provided first aid and immediately called for assistance, according to police, but the woman died from the gunshot wound. Police have ruled the death a suicide and say the incident is still under investigation. 

Police say the traffic stop was initiated at 4:24 p.m., and as of 5:55 p.m. there was still a large police presence in the area.
