CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — A 14-year-old girl died at a Gold’s Gym in Chesterfield County early Thursday morning.
Police responded to the gym, located in the 5700 block of Hopkins Road, at around 5:10 a.m. for a report of possible cardiac arrest and found the teen unresponsive.
Rescue personnel arrived and pronounced the girl deceased at the scene.
Gym members told 8News the gym shut down for several hours as investigators looked into how the 14-year-old died.
“It’s pretty shocking, honestly to hear about that, especially a young girl,” Gavin Wood, a gym member said.
Gold’s Gym shared a statement with 8News on Thursday:
We are devastated by the tragic death of a teenager at our Chesterfield gym this morning, and the local gym team is doing all they can to assist police in their investigation. Our hearts go out to her family and friends during this difficult time.”

News of the teen’s death also put Michelle Crawley and her daughter on edge.
“We look forward to coming here, reaching our goals and doing what we need to do, so it was kind of a shock that we found out that someone passed away here,” Crawley said.
Investigators haven’t released the circumstances of how the teen died, but gym members wonder if working out too hard or consuming excessive amounts of caffeine played a role.
“That to me would make me watch what I’m taking and don’t try not to work out too aggressive,” Wood said.
The investigation is ongoing, though police do not suspect foul play. Investigators said they don’t have evidence this was a drug overdose.
