Shots Fired Handgun Seized Teenager Charged Newport News Police

A teenager is facing charges after police say shots were fired Sunday night in Newport News.

Newport News police say officers were called to Garrow Drive and Shannon Drive around 8:15 p.m. after gunshots were reported in the area.

Residents gave officers a direction in which the shots were fired, and a description of the suspects.

Police say the officers found and detained a male and a female who were walking near Denbigh Boulevard and Darden Drive — but did not find a gun.

A K-9 called to the scene later found the firearm in a front yard.

The male, a 17-year-old, was then charged with discharging a firearm, possession of a firearm by persons under the age of 18 and reckless handling of a firearm.
