HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) — Police in Hampton say a suspect briefly took off in a vehicle over the weekend that had two children inside.

In a news release, Hampton police said a vehicle was reported stolen from a Wawa on East Mercury Boulevard around 3 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 16.

Police said the 24-year-old woman who called 911 reported that two children, ages eight and two, were inside the vehicle when it was taken.

A preliminary investigation found the woman had left the vehicle running at the gas pumps — with the children still inside — to go inside the convenience store, police said.

The suspect, who was walking through the parking lot, got into the driver’s seat and took off.

Police said the suspect immediately noticed the children and parked the vehicle at a nearby 7-Eleven, and then ran away from the scene.

The children were unharmed, according to police.

Officers are now searching for the suspect, who is described as being a black male between the ages of 17 and 22. A photo of the suspect was provided by police.

If you recognize this person or know anything about the incident, call the Crime Line at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP.
