Police seized more guns, shootings dropped in Newport News during 2017

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — Newport News police say more illegal guns were seized in 2017 compared to the previous year.

“Well I think it’s an issue in our city and the surrounding cities,” said Newport News Police Chief Mike Grinstead.  “Firearms are the biggest part of our violent crime.”

Police say 661 guns were seized last year — compared to 603 in 2016.

“We’ve shown that we are in the areas we know there are firearms,” Grinstead added. “When you look at it, for a city our size that’s a lot of firearms that we took off the street.”

Police also say shootings and homicides declined in 2017.

Grinstead says many of guns were stolen in other crimes like car break-ins or home burglaries.  Many of them were found on convicted felons who aren’t legally allowed to carry.
“A lot of firearms are passed between individuals to commit crimes, so we break that cycle and that weapon is taken out of circulation,” Grinstead said.
Guns that were stolen will be returned.  The others are on the way to be destroyed.
