POQUOSON, Va. (WAVY) — A dance instructor is behind bars after police say he sexually abused two young girls over the last five years.

Maurice Benjamin Martinez, 27, of the 000 block of Rue De Grasse, was served the felony warrants Jan. 25 after an investigation into the allegations.

Poquoson police say the crimes occurred in the city between 2013 and 2018.10 On Your Side has linked Martinez to dance studios in Williamsburg, Hampton and Poquoson. Police say none of the businesses are tied to the alleged misconduct; however, his jobs did put him in close contact with many juveniles.

The owner of one dance studio, who wished to remain anonymous, tells WAVY.com she is stunned about the charges.

“I’ve always felt [Maurice] was more of a spiritual person, considerate and cared about the kids,” she said. “I hope the truth, whatever it is, comes out for everyone involved.”Martinez is being held without bond in the Virginia Peninsula Regional Jail. He declined to comment on the charges. Detectives say they are still interviewing people, including potential victims, and additional charges could be filed.

Police say any inappropriate behavior tied to Martinez should be reported.
