A motorcyclist died after crashing late Wednesday night shortly after police say he had fled a traffic stop.

Newport News police say an officer tried to pull over the motorcyclist on Oyster Point Road for speeding just before 11 p.m. However, the motorcyclist — who was later identified as a 34-year-old Hampton man — immediately fled and went north on Warwick Boulevard.

Police say the officer did not pursue the man, and instead stopped another vehicle for a headlight violation.

A call was received a short time later about a motorcycle that crashed at Campbell Road and Warwick Boulevard. Police say the same officer responded to the scene and believed it was the same motorcycle.

The man was taken to a local hospital where he died overnight Thursday. The Newport News Police Department Crash Team Unit is investigating the crash.
