NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — A husband and wife died following a shooting in Newport News Wednesday afternoon.
The call for the shooting in the 500 block of Ashton Green Blvd. came in at 3:54 p.m.
According to a police spokesperson, officers arrived to discover a man and woman suffering from gunshot wounds. They were both pronounced dead.
The two were identified on Thursday as 45-year-old Natacha Rodriguez-Cruz and her husband, 41-year-old Marcos Vasquez. Police said the incident appeared to be domestic-related.
The public was not in any danger, according to police.
Keadra Ocampo, who lives across the street but didn’t know the couple well, said, “It’s kind of eerie, just to see that that happened over there. Those people, I’m sure, didn’t deserve any of that.”
A large police scene brought neighbors out of their homes.
“I came out and saw tons of police, like a whole lot of police tape, nothing ever happens here,” said Ocampo. “They’re just nice people. I wouldn’t expect them to go through anything like that.”
“I got home and the first thing I see is cops around the street,” said one neighbor.
Neighbors 10 On Your Side spoke with who didn’t want to be identified say they heard what sounded like fireworks Wednesday evening, and only realized they were gunshots when police showed up a short time later.
One man said hes been living in the neighborhood for 22 years and came to see what was going on.
“The house is right next to one of my old childhood friends,” he said.
