PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — A fatal crash closed lanes to traffic for more than seven hours Thursday morning on the VA-164 Western Freeway in Portsmouth.
Portsmouth police said the crash happened just before 3 a.m. on 164 East — about half a mile from the Towne Point Road exit — and involved a tractor-trailer and a passenger vehicle.
Police investigation revealed a black Kia Sorrento was hit with the rear corner of the tractor trailer. The collision caused the victim to lose control of the vehicle and crash. The victim was not wearing a seatbelt which caused him to be ejected.
The driver of the vehicle, 52-year-old Albert White of Newport News was pronounced dead at the scene, according to police.
The driver of the tractor trailer was not injured and remained at the scene.
Eastbound lanes were shutdown following the crash, and remained closed until just after 10 a.m.
