Police: Hampton shooting was self-inflicted

HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) — A police investigation has revealed a shooting Thursday in the city was self-inflicted.

Police say a 34-year-old Hampton man was struck by a bullet after the firearm he was handling discharged.

The incident happened in the area of Sloop Court and Cunningham Drive. Police say the victim left the area where the incident occurred, but a concerned bystander called authorities after seeing the man in the 2500 block of Cunningham Drive.

The victim was taken to the hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

The gun was recovered by police and the incident remains under investigation.

Authorities are also investigating a separate shooting that happened minutes later at the Tech Center Square Apartments in Newport News. Police say two people were shot in that incident.
