NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — Gunfire rang out inside a Newport News apartment and now police are trying find a killer.
Newport News police said officers responded to a report of gunshots heard near the 100 block of Mytilene Drive in the Newmarket section of the city around 4 a.m. Wednesday.
Officers found the woman inside an apartment dead with multiple gunshot wounds.
Police identified the victim as 20-year-old Breonna Patterson. 10 On Your Side spoke to the property owner, who said Patterson had a young daughter.
Family members, along with new police chief Steve Drew, arrived at the scene shortly before 8 a.m.
10 On Your received a picture of Breonna Patterson holding her small daughter.
She has been called a free-spirit. She did what she wanted, and didn’t care what people thought about her.
A man in the neighborhood who did not give his name said, “She was just quiet. She was a girl walking around. That’s it. Every time I came out here I would see her walking about. That’s about it.”
Early this morning, around 4, someone came in her apartment and killed Patterson. You could see one of the many bullet casings on the floor.
Chief Drew was out at the scene to explain what happened.
“We checked the door, and it was open. We went in to make sure everyone was safe. They did find an African-American woman deceased with shell casings … those patrolling were familiar with the address, we’ve been here before.”
Katherine Rowe lives out here and is scared, “Yes I am concerned, because it could have been outside and the shooting could have hit other apartments.”
The police chief thinks the public is not in danger, “I think this is an isolated incident. I don’t want to get too much into this situation, but it is going to be confined to whatever was going on in apartment 185.”
However, that reassuring thought isn’t too reassuring to Katherine Rowe, “t’s crazy. It’s crazy. It’s stirred up. I don’t know if I want to stay out here. Stuff is happening out here, you never know, you never know.”
There are no suspects so far in this case. Please call the Crime Line if you know anything about who may have done this.
