Police: Estranged girlfriend barricades herself in a home in Newport News

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — A woman, described by police as an “estranged girlfriend,” barricaded herself inside a home Sunday afternoon.

Newport News police said they were dispatched to the 1000th block of Center Avenue in reference to a domestic dispute.

The victim told police a 27-year-old woman came to the home and was asked to leave. She refused and then became physical before barricading herself in a back room of the house.

The woman is believed to be under the influence of narcotics and may have some type of weapon with her. Police say there were outstanding warrants for her arrest.

Negotiators worked to get the woman out of the home for a little over three hours before she was taken into custody.

There are no life-threatening injuries related to this incident, police say.

10 On Your Side spoke with neighbors in the area about the situation. One said, “It was wild. We haven’t had this much police in this area. I’ve been here 60 some years I ain’t never seen that many. I said something major is down there happening.”

During an interview with one witness, 10 On Your Side’s Aesia Toliver saw the woman try to elude police again by kicking out their squad car window. After another brief struggle, they were able to get the woman safely back into custody.
