Police: DUI driver assaulted trooper, struck police vehicle during chase

HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) — A drunken man assaulted a Virginia State Police trooper during a DUI stop and later struck a police car during a chase, according to authorities. 

Police say Warren Anthony Winstead is charged with DUI, DUI refusal, felony elude and evade and assault on a law enforcement after the incident around 6:40 p.m. Sunday night on I-64 in Hampton near Armistead Avenue. 

After he was pulled over for a DUI stop, police say Winstead became combative and assaulted the trooper.

He then made his way back to his vehicle, starting a police pursuit. 

When troopers tried to stop Winstead at one point during the chase, they say he struck a trooper’s vehicle. 

No injuries were reported.
