Police: Drunk driver charged after running from fatal crash involving elderly woman

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — An alleged drunk driver from Florida is in custody after police say he hit and killed an elderly woman and then ran from the scene.

Thirty-five-year-old Anthony Francis Spence, of Winter Park, Florida, is charged with driving while intoxicated, involuntary manslaughter, hit-and-run and refusing a blood/breath test.

Police say 73-year-old Maria Grayson Fox, of Virginia Beach, was making a turn onto Great Neck Road around 10 p.m. Sunday night when she got hit by Spence’s car. She died at the scene. 

Spence and his passenger took off running after the crash, according to officers. Both of them were taken to the hospital for minor injuries.

The passenger has not yet been charged.
