CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) — Chesapeake police say a robbery at a Dollar General last week may be related to other similar robberies in the Hampton Roads area.
Police say they are looking for three suspects in the Chesapeake robbery, which happened Jan. 17. at a store on S. Military Highway. All three were armed with handguns and got away with cash as well as Newport cigarettes.
Chesapeake police spokesperson Kelly Elliot told 10 On Your Side the Jan. 17 robbery is connected to other robberies in Hampton Roads.
Elliot says Chesapeake, Portsmouth, and Norfolk police departments are now working together to find the suspects.
Officer Jo Ann Hughes with the Norfolk Police Department said the three men have been connected to nine robberies in those areas so far.
Hughes says that includes four Dollar General stores, a Family Dollar, and a Skrimp Shack.
“We realized that Portsmouth also had a robbery which was within an hour and it was the same descriptions, three males, one was wearing like a blue-ish, green-ish hoodie, that’s when we all started working together,” said Elliot.
Police say that’s how they were able to link them.
They were wearing the same outfits, and stole the same cigarettes,
“I think it’s just the matter of the fear of these employees when they are working. They are armed with a handgun. Certainly anything can go wrong. Somebody could startle one of the suspects and that type of thing, so we take it very seriously, we don’t want anyone hurt,” added Elliot.
Elliot said they are still investigating robberies in the area because the trio may have hit even more.
There have been multiple recent robberies at dollar stores across the region. Three different dollar stores were robbed in Chesapeake, Portsmouth and Norfolk during last week’s snow storm.
