CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) — A break-in suspect was seriously injured after police say he was shot by a homeowner in Chesapeake on Thursday morning, police say.
Officers responded to the 2000 block of Martin Avenue at around 3:45 a.m. for a shooting call.
Police said the homeowner told officers he confronted a man outside of his attached garage who was trying to break in to his home.
The homeowner told the suspect to leave, but fired gun at the suspect when he refused, police said.
Police said the suspect was taken to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries.
10 On Your Side spoke with many neighbors off camera, who tell us the community is very quiet and a lot of the residents have lived on the street for decades.
One woman, who did not want to be identified, told us she was on her way to visit a homeowner when she saw the crime scene.
“When you see the yellow tape, that’s the first thing that pops into your mind-somebody got hurt, somebody got killed,” she said.
She is hoping that the break-in is isolated and that their concerns will not last too long.
“You never know when it’s going to happen,” she said about crime.
