Police arrest serial armed robber in Portsmouth

News

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — Police have arrested the suspect who robbed three businesses over the last three weeks.

Detectives say 24-year-old James Deshawn Williams robbed the Rite Aid on High Street in Churchland on May 20 and the Walgreens across the street on May 27 before robbing the Walgreens on Frederick Boulevard on June 3. All three robberies happened on Sundays.

“He has produced a gun but he hasn’t discharged it. That could be his next step,” said Detective William Baker. “He could escalate it into deadly force.”

The suspect is described as 5’9 or 5’10, 185-195 pounds with medium complexion, according to police.

Baker says the suspect’s calm demeanor leads him to believe he has experience.

“He is comfortable right now,” said Baker. “He doesn’t feel anyone knows what is going on.”

Williams has been charged with three counts of robbery, three counts of use of a firearm in commission of a felony, and  three counts of possession of a firearm by convicted felon. He is currently in Portsmouth City Jail with no bond.
