HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) — An investigation is underway after police say a 5-year-old child reportedly shot himself in the wrist after finding a gun in his mother’s purse in Hampton.

This is all happened on Tuesday while the mother was talking on the phone on I-64 near Mercury Boulevard, according to Virginia State Police.

Police say the boy’s mother, a 28-year-old from Portsmouth, was taking her son to a doctor’s appointment at the time.

The mother told police she was on the phone and didn’t realize the child unbuckled himself and went  into her purse. She told officers she heard a loud bang, and discovered he had shot himself in the wrist.

The mother took her son to a nearby Patient First Center in Newport News, and he was later taken to CHKD in stable condition.

The Hampton Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office is working with police to determine if charges will be filed.
