VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — Three people were killed Tuesday morning in a two-vehicle crash in Virginia Beach, according to police.
Virginia Beach police said officers were called to Shore Drive, just past Diamond Springs Road, around 9:40 a.m. A preliminary investigation found a BMW going east on Shore Drive lost control, went across the median and into the path of a Hyundai going westbound.
Neighbor Elizabeth McCoy saw the aftermath.
“First we noticed the car had the top cut off entirely and the other one was in the grass in the median smashed,” said McCoy.
Police said the Hyundai hit the passenger side of the BMW.
The driver of the Hyundai, 52-year-old Charlene Gordon White, and a passenger in the BMW, 20-year-old Jalen Patrick Broadus, were both pronounced dead at the scene, according to police.
The driver of the BMW, 20-year-old Isai Jimenez, was taken to a local hospital and later died.
Police spokesperson Tonya Pierce said Broadus and Jimenez were in the Navy.
Other motorists noticed delays and detours throughout the day.
“Earlier today they had the road blocked off so we had to drive all the way around go down Diamond Springs and go back this way,” McCoy said.
She got a closer look at the crash when she went out hours later.
“When we were pulling out of food lion, they had the cars on a tow truck, and I mean you could just see pieces of car everywhere,” she said.
Cleanup crews got debris out of the street so the road could finally reopen.
Police are still investigating how this crash happened, they have not yet released the identity of the victims.
The crash happened amid another day of rainfall in Hampton Roads. A flood warning was issued for Virginia Beach through 4:30 p.m.
