VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — A teenager has been charged after police say two people were killed Thursday night in a crash involving a motorcycle and a moped near a busy Virginia Beach intersection, police say.
Monday, police identified the two victims as 23-year-old Dalton Senseney and 24-year-old Daniel Tyler Nicol, both of Virginia Beach.
An emergency call for the crash came in at 10:50 p.m., according to Virginia Beach dispatchers.
Virginia Beach police say two vehicles, a Kawasaki Ninja motorcycle and Subaru Crosstrek SUV, were racing eastbound on Dam Neck Road around that time.
A little ways ahead, a Genuine Roughouse50 moped was traveling in the same lane as the Kawasaki. The motorcycle ran into the back of the moped, causing the motorcyclist to be thrown into a ditch.
Both the driver of the motorcycle and the driver of the moped were pronounced dead at the scene, according to police.
The driver of the Subaru Crosstrek that was seen racing the Kawasaki from the traffic signal at Harpers Road was charged with racing which resulted in the death of another and reckless driving. That driver is a 17-year-old girl who is being held in a juvenile detention center, police say.
A woman who witnessed the crash spoke with 10 On Your Side, saying she was driving behind the motorcycle for about five miles starting at Princess Anne Road.
“Once they went through London Bridge I lost them I couldn’t’t see them anymore. I pulled up and saw the smoke before I saw anything,” Thompson said. “Then I saw the flames. I got out, I put my blinkers on, I got out of my vehicle. I was hysterical. I called 911. It was bad. Really bad.”
