NORTHAMPTON COUNTY, Va. (WAVY) — A small aircraft struck a power line and crashed Sunday afternoon on Virginia’s Eastern Shore.
The crash happened near the intersection of Smith Beach Road and Candy Lane. Northampton County dispatchers received an emergency call for the crash just after 3 p.m.
Virginia State Police Sgt. Michelle Anaya said a gyrocopter was going south when the engine cut off, causing the aircraft to drop quickly. The craft clipped a power line — which then became wrapped up in the propellor — and went another 226 feet before crashing in a field.
The pilot was rescued from the aircraft and was taken to a hospital in Virginia Beach with injuries that were not considered life-threatening.
