Phoebus fights through John Marshall for spot in Va. Class 3 state final

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — The Phoebus Phantoms defeated defending state champion John Marshall 74-71 in overtime to advance to the Class 3 state championship game.

Senior Kyree Temple led all scorers with 20 points.

The game was at a slow pace, but picked up immediately after two big dunks by both sides.

John Marshall would continue to stick around in this game by hitting their free throws. Four quarters was not enough to hold these two powerhouses as they would need overtime.

Phoebus would gain the upper hand late in overtime, and secure the win at the free throw line, winning 74-71.

“We talked about this from the beginning of the year, we set our goals, the guys just gave a great effort. John Marshall, they gave us everything we can handle. Go Phoebus Phantoms. Boy did they play some ball tonight,” said Phoebus Coach James Daniels.

“It feels good. We have a chance to compete for a state championship, my first time ever. I’m just ready,” said Kyree Temple.

Phoebus has an opportunity to win their first state title in school history as they head to Richmond to play Northside at VCU’s Siegel Center on Thursday at 2:30 p.m
