NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Temperatures are expected to dip below freezing this weekend and PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) wants to help protect your pets by offering free straw for outside doghouse bedding.

Whenever possible, PETA recommends bringing pets indoors to prevent them from suffering frostbite and exposure, but they know this is not always an option.

Also, PETA says animals can become dehydrated when temperatures fall below freezing and their water source becomes iced over.

The Norfolk-based organization suggests checking water bowls at least twice daily during any periods of extreme cold and breaking up any ice that may form.

The free pet straw is available for pick up at PETA headquarters located at 501 Front Street in Norfolk.

If you have questions about this program you can call PETA’s toll-free number 1-800-566-9768.
