GATES COUNTY, N.C. (WAVY) — Patrons braved the cold waters of Beaver Lake on Saturday for the 8th annual Polar Plunge for Special Olympics.

The plunge happened in Gates County around 11:30 a.m. and the plungers received a t-shirt and their choice of food for their efforts.

There was also a chili challenge, or chili cook-off, for those supporters who weren’t up for the other type of “chilly challenge.” The winning chef received a t-shirt and bragging rights.
