Patriotic Festival kicks off in Va. Beach Friday

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — The 2018 Virginia Beach Patriotic Festival kicks off Friday evening.

Country music artists Brett Eldredge, Brantley Gilbert and Cole Swindell are all scheduled to perform over the weekend.

As expected, there are a number of tents, organizations and resources for military families at the festival. Some of the actives include mobile tours, exhibits and performances by military bands.

Hampton Roads and Central Virginia USO also held Warrior Week in conjunction with the Patriotic Festival.

President and CEO Paula Moran says it’s the fourth year they’ve had the week to highlight sacrifices military members and their families make.

“It’s a labor of love. I’ve never served in the military myself but this is a way of giving back to those who provided the freedom for me to do what I want,” Moran said.

According to Moran, the USO held military families globally but is not government funded.

She says that attending the festival and donating can support their organization and families.

“Everything we do is free. We have to raise the money to make it happen. This event is no exception. This is about the community putting their money where their mouth are and that is to support the USO,” she said.
