Patient at Eastern State Hospital in Williamsburg hit by vehicle

JAMES CITY COUNTY, Va. (WAVY) — A man was seriously injured after police say he was hit by a vehicle near a mental health care facility in Williamsburg.

James City County police said officers were called to the scene on DePue Drive, in the area of Eastern State Hospital, around 11:15 a.m.

Police said a patient at the hospital, a 23-year-old man, was being placed in a transport vehicle when he got away from staff and fled. 

He was walking on DePue Drive when he stepped in front of a passing vehicle, police said. The man was taken to Riverside Regional Medical Center with serious injuries. 

The driver of the vehicle is not being charged.
