Panel: VB schools has strong safety plan in place

News

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — A panel on school safety gave 11 recommendations to the Virginia Beach School Board on Tuesday.

Superintendent Dr. Aaron Spence announced the formation of the new Blue Ribbon Panel in mid-April. The panel brought together members of Naval Air Station Oceana, the Virginia Beach Police Department, the school district and the city to investigate school safety.

The panel was formed following a deadly shooting at a high school in Parkland, Florida, and a number of threats were made against different schools in Virginia Beach earlier this year.

The panel says overall, the district has a strong safety plan in place already. It praised the district’s relationship with the local police department.

Among the recommendations included conducting more safety training for staff and increasing mental health support for students.

The panel reviewed data from community meetings, an online town hall, and school tours and interviews to come up with the recommendations.

10 On Your Side’s Jason Marks sat down with Spence to talk about the recommendations.
