VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — The Virginia Beach courthouse was evacuated Wednesday morning after an unknown powder was mailed to the office of the court’s clerk.
Virginia Beach dispatch told WAVY.com a call was received just after 9 a.m. for a suspicious package at the courthouse.
WAVY’s Joe Fisher reports an unknown powder was found in mail sent to the court clerk’s office. The powder was reportedly in an envelope addressed to a district judge.
The FBI has been called to investigate.
Five people were in the vicinity when the substance was found, but none of them were showing symptoms, according to the sheriff’s office.
The substance was not a threat to the public, according to the Virginia Beach Fire Department. It has been sent to a lab for further analysis.
Authorities cleared the courthouse early Wednesday afternoon.
