SUFFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — A medical office in Suffolk was briefly closed after officials say a substance was found in an envelope.

Suffolk officials said the substance — which was initially described as white and powdery — was discovered at the Gastrointestinal & Liver Specialists of Tidewater office off Harbour View Boulevard.

Dispatch received a call about the incident just before 9 a.m.

Officials said the substance was later identified as a “dust-like” material on gauze packaging.

The Suffolk Fire Marshal’s Office and a state hazmat representative responded to the scene Tuesday, along with an inspector with the United States Postal Service.

Officials said the office was closed and employees sheltered in place during an investigation. The office was reopened around 10:50 a.m.
