NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — A Newport News Public Schools school bus brushed a tree limb Tuesday night while traversing a narrow roadway, according to school officials.

The incident happened around 5:20 p.m. at Old Oyster Point Road and Atkins Lane. Officials say the driver of Bus 115 carrying students from Saunders Elementary drove the bus close to the road’s edge and scraped the tree limb.

About 30 students were onboard at the time and no injures were reported. Officials say the driver pulled over and some students were released to their parents. Other students were put on another bus to be taken home.

Meanwhile, two school buses from Virginia Beach and Norfolk public schools were involved in crashes during the first day of school on Tuesday. No injuries were reported in either crash.
