NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — A Norfolk man has been charged with arson after a fire at the Smith and Williams Funeral Home.
Officials say police responded to a burglary alarm Wednesday around 2:40 a.m., and saw someone leaving the area. They took 61-year-old Harold Centers into custody at the nearby 7-Eleven.
Norfolk firefighters were also called to the same address in response to a fire alarm and arrived to find smoke coming from the eaves. Firefighters entered the building and found the fire in the funeral home chapel. They got the fire under control quickly.
No injuries were reported.
It is unclear how much damage the building may have sustained or what caused the fire.
Centers has been charged with burning to a structure while committing a felony, burning to a structure and burglary to a building. He is being held in jail without bond.
