Officials confirm lightning strike set Chesapeake home on fire

CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) — Chesapeake fire officials have confirmed the cause of an early morning fire on Wickwood Drive was from a lightning strike.

Chesapeake fire crews responded to the the 500 block of Wickwood Drive in the Great Bridge section of the city around 5 a.m. Monday.

Fire crews found fire coming through the roof of a home where a family of two resided.

Homeowners stated, “We heard a loud boom and the whole house shook.”

Moments later the fire alarm activated as the home filled with smoke.

An aggressive attack was made by firefighters for a couple of hours to completely extinguish the fire,  which spread to the attic spaces of the home.

Officials tell 10 On Your Side all the people who live there escaped without injury, including pets. The occupants are staying with family.

One firefighter received minor burn injuries though, and was treated on the scene.
