Official: Newport News school bus rear-ends dump truck on I-64

HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) — A Newport News school bus rear-ended a dump truck on Interstate 64 in Hampton, officials say.

Michelle Price with Newport News Public Schools tells WAVY.com bus 76 was carrying three students from different high schools to Sentara CarePlex Hospital for a work training program when the crash happened.

The crash happened near exit 261 and the Hampton Roads Center Parkway. Troopers were called to the scene around 8:30 a.m.

Traffic cameras showed the front end of the bus was badly damaged following the crash.

Price said a bus assistant was taken to the hospital to be evaluated.The students will be taking another bus to the hospital, where they will be checked out.

Virginia State Police Sgt. Michelle Anaya said the assistant’s injuries were not considered life-threatening.

The crash was one of several state police responded to across Hampton Roads Thursday morning. One person was killed in a crash on I-64 at Settlers Landing Road, according to state police.
