Three cats were killed Monday night after a fire started in the kitchen of a Virginia Beach home.

Dispatch said firefighters were called to Thousand Oaks Drive, off First Colonial Road, around 9 p.m. for an apartment fire.

Virginia Beach Fire Department spokesman Art Kohn said there were heavy flames in the apartment’s kitchen when crews arrived on scene. Three cats died in the fire.

A male who lived there was taken to the hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation and burns to hit chest. He was hurt after trying to go back into the home and get the cats, according to Kohn.

The cause of the fire was cooking-related, but Kohn said it was not clear whether it was careless or unattended cooking.

A female who lived there was unhurt. Kohn said both residents were displaced as a result of the fire.

According to Kohn, cooking is the biggest cause of residential fires in Virginia Beach and across the country. Officials urge residents not to go back into a fire for possessions or pets.
