JAMES CITY COUNTY, Va. (WAVY) — An area where owners can let their dogs off-leash is opening May 1 in James City County.

County officials said in a news release the area will be a largely unfenced, 150 feet by 300 feet spot within Jamestown Beach Event Park. It will be marked at the corners by fencing.

Dogs can only be off-leash for up to 8 feet outside of this area, the release said.

The county’s Board of Supervisors amended the code in March to allow for off-leash areas for dogs to be established in designated areas within county parks.

The parks and recreation department is conducting a trial program with this first area before deciding whether to consider any kind of expansion.

The new area will be open daily from 8 a.m. until sunset, but will be closed during special events.
