ODU student gets surprise reunion at graduation

News

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — A student graduating from Old Dominion University got a surprise on Saturday that may have rivaled earning his diploma.

Jacob Dean was reunited with his fiancee, Abigayil, after she was deployed for five months.

“I started setting things up a month in advance, just in case  I was able to be here. And I’ve been stationed in Florida so we’ve been a part quite a bit longer than just my five month deployment,” Abigayil said.

“I mean it was a thought process in my mind but i didn’t think it was actually going to happen. There’s no way it’s happening to me,” Jacob said.

“I communicated with people. I had a friend that was suppose to be here to FaceTime him just in case I was able to be here so I would have an extra ticket,” Abigayil.

“I expected to just be there when he came off the stage but the setup was
definitely different than what I imagined,” she added.

“I was like a deer in headlights because I wasn’t expecting it all,” Jacob said. When I saw her I knew —
there she is and I’m going to get her.”
