NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY)- Old Dominion University’s men’s basketball team tweeted American Airlines early Wednesday morning, demanding answers as to why their flight from St. Thomas to Miami was delayed for over 18 hours.

According to the team, they were originally supposed to leave on an American Airlines flight at 3:20 p.m on Tuesday, but had to get off the plane due to a mechanical issue.
The team says they were rescheduled to take American Airlines Flight 9240 from the island around 11 p.m. on Tuesday, but the new flight also had a mechanical issue. It was then rescheduled to depart Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. (AST).
Around 9:20 a.m. (EST), the team tweeted they were boarding their flight to Miami.
American Airlines responded to the team’s original tweet stating, “We’re working hard to get you taken care of. Our sincere apologies for the wait. We’ll keep you up to date with any necessary info.”

10 On Your Side reached out to American Airlines for a comment on the situation. They responded with the following statement:
“We never want to disrupt our customers’ travel plans, and we are sorry for the trouble this caused; the delay was the result of a mechanical issue. Our customer relations team will be proactively reaching out to the customers who were impacted by this delay to apologize and offer compensation.”
The team eventually flew from Miami to Norfolk on a private flight and arrived at Norfolk International Airport around 7 p.m., according to ODU sports information director Grant Gardner.
