CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WAVY) — ODU’s football game against the UNC Charlotte 49ers has been moved up to Thursday.
The universities announced Wednesday that the game will be played at 4 p.m. Thursday because of the expected arrival of Hurricane Florence.
Dr. Camden Wood Selig, ODU’s athletic director, issued the following statement on the schedule change:
On behalf of our Old Dominion football program, I want to thank Mike Hill and the Charlotte administration for keeping the safety of our student athletes and fans paramount while working with the league and other officials to ensure this conference match up could be maintained despite challenging and changing inclement weather predictions.”
Florence, a powerful Category 4 hurricane, is forecast to make landfall in the Carolinas on Friday — and bring with it potentially catastrophic winds.
The Monarchs will enter Thursday’s game with a 0-2 record, after dropping their conference opener to the Florida International Panthers, 28-20. ODU took a big loss in their season-opening game against the Liberty Flames, 52-10.
The Monarchs are 3-0 against the 49ers all-time, winning last season’s contest 6-0.
Thursday’s game is being broadcast on ESPN 3.
