FRANKLIN COUNTY, Va. (WRIC/WAVY) — The National Weather Service has confirmed that a tornado touched down near Smith Mountain.
NWS said the tornado was reported at 10:48 a.m., moving northeast at 40 mph, according to WAVY sister station WFXR in Roanoke.
The area where the tornado was spotted was in Franklin County, near western Smith Mountain Lake. WFXR reporter Delaney Hall shared an image of a home that was heavily damaged.
The confirmed tornado came as the Hampton Roads region is bracing for possible severe storms that could impact the region late Friday into Saturday.
