EASTVILLE, Va. (WAVY) — A Northampton High School student is in custody after the alleged rape of a fellow student at the school on the Eastern Shore.
Northampton Sheriff David Doughty Jr. says his office was notified of a sexual assault complaint on Thursday, and an investigation revealed the alleged assault happened at the school.
The juvenile suspect, whose name is being witheld, has been charged with rape and abduction, and is being held at the Norfolk Detention Center. The other student is also a juvenile, Doughty says.
On Tuesday, parents were sent a letter about the assault from the school.
According to the letter, school administrators were made aware of the alleged sexual assault after dismissal on Thursday. Officials say the student accused of assault was not allowed to go to school the next day.
10 On Your Side spoke with some Northampton High School students on Wednesday, who said the news of the assault surprised them, but they still feel safe at the school.
They tell 10 On Your Side the teachers and school staff are good about enforcing the school’s rules, including no loitering in the hallways and making sure all the students are where they’re supposed to be throughout the day.
10 On Your Side spoke over the phone with Northampton County Public Schools Superintendent Charles Lawrence. He says he spoke with school administrators about the incident.
At this point, Lawrence says there are no plans on discussing the assault with students.
Doughty says the investigation is ongoing with help from Northampton County Public Schools. Those with information in the case are urged to contact the Northampton Sheriff’s Office at (757) 678-0458, or use Tip411 by texting 847-411 and begin the tip message with NHCS.
