Person found dead in Ahoskie, suspect in custody, authorities say

AHOSKIE, N.C. (WAVY) -- An investigation is underway after authorities say a person was shot Friday morning in Ahoskie.

Ahoskie police chief Troy Fitzhugh confirmed officers and deputies with the Hertford County Sheriff's Office responded to Church Street, where 33-year-old Dwight Nathaniel Saunders was found deceased.

Fitzhugh later confirmed police were obtaining a search warrant to go into a home, and that a person of interest had been identified as 29-year-old Cola Terrell Harrell.

He was arrested later that day, according to Fitzhugh.

Harrell was charged with first degree murder.
