HATTERAS, N.C. (WAVY) – The N.C. Department of Transportation (NCDOT) will begin a passenger-only ferry service between Hatteras and Ocracoke Village beginning May 20.
Starting Monday, visitors travelling between Hatteras and Ocracoke Village will have a new option aside from the popular car ferries.
NCDOT’s Ferry Division announced two, free preview days on May 20 and May 21.
The passenger ferry will run seven days a week from May 22 through Sept. 5.
“It will give summer travelers a quicker, wait-free, stress-free transportation option between the two islands, and provide a big boost to the local tourist economy,” said Ferry Division Director, Harold Thomas.
The M/V Martha’s Vineyard Express will be the ferry used from the New Jersey-based ferry company Seastreak Marine.
The ferry is scheduled to make three round trips daily through the summer, from Hatteras terminal at 9 a.m., 1 p.m. and 5 p.m., and from Ocracoke Silver Lake terminal at 11 a.m., 3 p.m., and 7 p.m.
After the free preview days, the ferry will start charging $1 on May 22.
A one-way trip takes approximately 70 minutes. Bicycles are free of charge.
