BUXTON, N.C. (WAVY) — Officials say a 79-year-old man has died after he was found floating in the ocean near the Cape Hatteras National Seashore Sunday afternoon.
According to the National Parks of Eastern North Carolina, a bystander noticed the man around 2 p.m.
The bystander brought the man to shore and attempted to resuscitate him before rescue crews arrived. The efforts the revive the man were unsuccessful.
Officials say rip currents were forecasted for the area and the man did not have a flotation device, but the cause of death has not been determined.
Dare County Emergency Medical Services, Hatteras Island Rescue Squad and Seashore Rangers responded to the incident.
There were seven swimming-related fatalities in this area last year and eight in 2016.
